Story Board

Story Board

We planned out the scenes we are going to use in our music video. As it is just a plan these shots are all taken in the same location, not the real locations.

Shot one -

This shot represents the girl looking out to sea. The sea will represent her feelings as she feels lonely. The sound used in this shot will all be diegetic.

Shot 2 - This will then jump cut to a shot of the sea with a lighthouse in the background, once again showing she feels lonely. The sound used in this shot will all be diegetic. (This will actually be the sea in the music video)

Shot 3 - The next shot is her singing, leaning against a wall. She has gained more confidence being on her own and wants to express this to the audience as this is were her story begins. The sound used in this shot will all be diegetic.

Shot 4 - This shot will be of the main character walking out of her house, where her journey to freedom begins. The sound used in this shot will all be diegetic.

Shot 5 - This will then flow onto the next shot, of her walking down the path, we decided to use a shot of her from the side so there is a variety of different shots in the music video. The sound used in this shot will all be diegetic.

Shot 6 -  This shot will then jump to the back of the main character walking out of the drive way, up the road. The sound used in this shot will all be diegetic.

Shot 7 - Next will be a close up of the sky, which will be fast forwarded on the computer, to show how time is passing in the music video. The sound used in this shot will all be diegetic.

Shot 8 - This will then jump to the sun set, this links into the lyrics of the music video as Amy Winehouse sings 'the sun goes down' so this shot is to show the sun going down and time passing and the girl moving on. The sound used in this shot will all be diegetic.

Shot 9 - Once again an image of the sky, but this time, the sky is dull, to show time passing. The sound used in this shot will all be diegetic.

Shot 10 - Will track the girl in the car, singing out the window. This is to show the girls journey is continuing. The sound used in this shot will all be diegetic.

Shot 11 - Another tracking shot of the girl walking in front of the camera, she is walking to the beach, where she feels free and can let all her feelings out. The sound used in this shot will all be diegetic.

Shot 12 - This image represents the boy in the music video, it shows she is thinking about the boy and all the good times they used to share with each other. The sound used in this shot will all be diegetic.

Shot 13 - This image shows how we are going to film a close up and track of the girl walking  towards the beach, still following the girls journey. The sound used in this shot will all be diegetic.

Shot 14 - This will be a shot of waves at the beach, the waves are choppy and rough, representing the girls feelings as she feels angry. The sound used in this shot will all be diegetic.

Shot 15 - We will then use another close up of writing in the sand saying 'THE END IS NEAR' this represents the characters relationship as it is coming to an end. The sound used in this shot will all be diegetic.

Shot 16 - The waves will then wash this writing away, suggesting that the girl needs to leave her past behind and move on. The sound used in this shot will all be diegetic.

Shot 17 - Here we will use a canted angle of the girl sitting on the rocks looking out to the sea, we have used this to show the girl is feeling confused and doesn't know what to do. The sound used in this shot will all be diegetic.

Shot 18 - This will then fade into a flashback of both the characters together when they were happy, this image represents the boy and girl. The sound used in this shot will all be diegetic.

Shot 19 - This will be a medium shot of the girl walking along the beach looking out to sea, still unsure about her feelings. The sound used in this shot will all be diegetic.

Shot 20 - This will be a close up of the sea, with a bridge above it, this is to show the girl feels caged in, and confused about the relationship. The sound used in this shot will all be diegetic.

Shot 21 - This will then jump to another shot of the sea in a small space. This emphasises that the girls feelings are locked up. The sound used in this shot will all be diegetic.

Shot 22 - This will be a long shot, the girl is still looking out to the sea and a bird flys past, the bird represents the girl, she finally feels free without the boy. The sound used in this shot will all be diegetic.

Shot 23 - This will be a medium shot of the girl miming the lyrics to the song 'Tears dry on their own' we will use the green screen and the sky will be in the background to show that time is passing. The sound used in this shot will all be diegetic.

Shot 24 - This shot represents the boy walking away from the relationship and fits in with the lyrics 'he walks away'. The sound used in this shot will all be diegetic.

Shot 25 - This shot also fits in with the lyrics 'the sun goes down' this is to show time passing and the end of the relationship is close. The sound used in this shot will all be diegetic.

Shot 26 - This shot is the break up of both characters and they bot go their separate ways. The sound used in this shot will all be diegetic.

Shot 27 - This shot represents when the boy walks away, it will show and follow the boy walking away as he doesn't want to be with the girl anymore. The sound used in this shot will all be diegetic.

Shot 28 - This will then jump to the girl walking away, into an open space as now that the relationship is over she feels free. The sound used in this shot will all be diegetic.

Shot 29 - A long shot of the girl spinning around in the open space,  this image represents the girl letting go of all her feelings. The sound used in this shot will all be diegetic.

Shot 30 - This will be a high angle, above the girl, showing her spinning around. The sound used in this shot will all be diegetic.

Shot 31 - Close up of the girl singing the lyrics of the song 'the sun goes down'. We will use a light that will shine on her face to do this, and it will pan down the girls face as it represents the sun, then the girl will be in darkness. The sound used in this shot will all be diegetic.

Shot 32 - Close up of the girl in the woods, once again in an open space as she feels free now that she is no longer in a relationship. The sound used in this shot will all be diegetic.

Shot 33 - A close up of the girl looking out the window watching the boy walk past, rain will then be on the window to show the girl feels upset about the break up. The sound used in this shot will all be diegetic.

This shot represents her looking out the window, but in the music video the boy will be walking past and it will be edited so rain in on the window.

Shot 34 - A long shot of the girl walking through the trees to represent her leaving her past behind her and moving on. The sound used in this shot will all be diegetic.

Shot 35 - Will show the sea nee again, but this time she is throwing a stick into the water, this represents her throwing her past away as she wants a fresh start. The sound used in this shot will all be diegetic.

Shot 36 - This will then jump cut to the girl looking out to the sea once again, this time she is clear about her future. The sound used in this shot will all be diegetic.

This image represents the sea (this will actually be the sea in the music video)

Shot 37 - Will then be a flash back of the girl walking away, she is now happy about the break up as she can move on and have a fresh start, without the boy in her life. The sound used in this shot will all be diegetic.

Shot 38 - Will be a close up of the girl, a tear will fall from her eye, we will then use a transition to show she's happy about being on her own and it will link into the lyrics 'my tears dry on their own'. The sound used in this shot will all be diegetic.

Shot 39 - The tear will then scroll back into her eye. The sound used in this shot will all be diegetic.

Audience Research

Audience Research

To gain some ideas on the genre of music we should base our music video on, we asked a variety of people which music genre they preferred on the social networking site Twitter. Below is a screenshot of some of the replies we received.

We recieved lots of different replies, and found Pop was the most common response. However we found that making a music video with a genre of Jazz would be more challenging for us and we would gain more skills, so we went with the genre of Soul Jazz. We decided to use the song 'Tears Dry On Their Own' by Amy Winehouse.

Tally Chart of our results

As you can see we did get more people voting for Pop, but as written above, we decided to use Jazz.

P.Diddy Textual Analysis

P.Diddy and Nicole Scherzinger – ‘Come to me’ music video

The start of the music video ‘Come to me’ by P.Diddy and Nicole Scherzinger starts off with an establishing shot of New York City, which is an expensive place to live in, suggesting the main characters have a lot of money. It is full of lights suggesting it is a busy place. We then see a steady shot of a car pulling up, it is surrounded by mist, this is mysterious as we want to know who is getting out of the car and they must be important. The video then has a close up of a clock with ‘4:30’ on it, it is the early hours of the morning and the clock is significant as we later see that he is going to a club were he meets Nicole. Tracking is then shown to P.Diddy’s bed where a woman is draped over him, it then pans across the room to a half naked woman answering the phone. A close up of her hand is shown and she is wearing an expensive ring, showing that the people in the video have a lot of money. Having two women in the room with him suggests that women are interested in P.Diddy. The framing in this part of the video shows the woman on the left hand side of the shot, then it jumps to P.Diddy waking up and him being in the very centre of the shot, this suggests he is much more important than her. We then see cross cutting of P.Diddy in his house getting ready and Nicole at the club, this shows he is laid back as he isn’t ready yet whereas everyone else is at the club, maybe suggesting he wants to make a big entrance.

We then see a medium shot of Nicole’s legs, she is wearing red Louboutin heels. Red is a strong, powerful colour, suggesting she is a powerful character and she has a lot of money also as they are expensive shoes. It also suggests that she has a dangerous side to her as the colour red also symbolises danger. They have used a medium shot here so the audience focus on her legs to show this. We then see lots of close ups of Nicole’s face, she is pouting a lot suggesting she is a seductive woman. We then see more cross cutting, this time from Nicole to the lively club, she has separated herself from everybody else, maybe because she can’t control her feelings towards P.Diddy and she’s excited to see him. Tracking is then used of P.Diddy walking into the club, he is being escorted by women, which shows women really like him and they want to protect him. He has entered the club through the back entrance showing he is an important character and he doesn’t want to mix with anybody else. P.Diddy then starts to sing and fix his hair, to make himself look more presentable and attract Nicole’s attention. A close up is then shown of P.Diddy putting his hand on the girl’s waist, suggesting he’s a controlling character.

Once he is in the club he has his hands on the girls legs once again showing he is controlling as he is showing everybody else in the club that they are ‘his property’. An eye line match is then used when P.Diddy looks over at Nicole, it shows to the audience that both characters have finally seen each other. Nicole is then seen sitting on a throne, the framing of the shot is that she is sat right in the middle, showing she’s as important as P.Diddy as she is in the centre of the frame like he was earlier on in the video. Once again cross cutting is used from P.Diddy to Nicole, he is dancing to try and seduce her. A close up of P.Diddy singing in to Nicole’s ear shows that he only wants her and he is making this clear to her by doing this. Hand-held movement is then used to show that this is were things start to get more serious between the two characters and uncontrollable, they can’t control their emotions towards each other.  Nicole then follows P.Diddy up the stairs in the club suggesting he’s captured her heart. Once they are upstairs we see framing through Nicole’s legs and P.Diddy is at the end of the corridor, this suggests things get more sexual between the characters and their feelings are more uncontrollable.  Nicole is then shown with pink lights behind her, this is very feminine and could also suggest she’s became more vulnerable under his company. Nicole then follows P.Diddy out of the corridor suggesting that he is a seductive man. We then see an aerial shot of a maze, they are both walking through the maze from separate sides, Nicole looks scared because she is slowly walking through and has her hands on the walls, showing she’s vulnerable, however P.Diddy is strongly walking through the maze, and it’s like he has planned it. The both meet in the middle of the maze, and the maze explodes suggesting there is no more sexual tension.  The maze then turns a neon colour suggesting things are hotting up between the pair and they are together. We then see a 2 shot of them both dancing with each other, after a while Nicole seems to of had enough and walks away from P.Diddy, however they break the180 degree rule as it follows Nicole who then is suddenly stopped by P.Diddy, showing he’s everywhere and no one can escape him.

Non diegetic sound is used as it is a music video and the lyrics tell us the story of the characters as Nicole says ‘you’re the only one I wanna talk to’ this shows that she doesn’t care about any body else who is at the club she just wants P.Diddy to herself. She also says ‘When will you make a move’ this suggests she’s been waiting a long time and she can’t contain her feelings towards him anymore and she wants him to make it clear that he likes her. However P.Diddy says ‘anywhere I appear they all stop and stare’ showing he likes all the attention he gets, and thinks everybody loves him which shows he is big headed. He also sings ‘I make miracles like I walked on water’ this suggests he thinks highly of himself, and thinks he is unstoppable and can do what ever he wants, this is the opposite to Nicole as he never says how much he wants her, like she wants him, suggesting he is a player. Throughout the whole video there are no other men characters shown, it is all girls, this shows he is a womaniser and maybe the best man in New York and that’s why he’s the only one in the club.

Chris Brown Textual Analysis

Chris Brown – ‘Don’t Wake Me Up’ music video

The start of the video ‘Don’t Wake Me Up’ by Chris Brown starts off with and establishing shot of him on a beach, with a sun set behind him. He is stood directly in front of this sunset showing he is the main character and the song is based on his feelings. A medium shot is then shown of him and what he is wearing and it then moves on to a low angle of him standing on the beach, the low angle makes him look big and powerful. Another medium shot is used of him in his room with a girl walking out of the room behind him, he has just woken up, where his story begins. We see another establishing shot of his bedroom, suggesting a lot of the music video is from his bedroom. He follows the girl out of the door and ends up in a maze, we see a zoom out on Chris trapped inside this maze, which then becomes an aerial shot to show how big the maze is. He follows the girl around the maze and we see a low angle of him looking up at a wall, which the girl walked through, this makes him look powerful and suggests he too, is going to walk through the wall. A zoom in is then used suggesting he has walked through the wall, and a medium shot is shown of Chris back in his bed. A 2 shot is then used of him following the girl again in a city. A close up of him is used to show his confusion of how he got there and why he can’t get to the girl. A close up of the girls face is then used which shows she powerful as Chris is following her, she very dominant. A zoom out is then used of Chris on a beach dancing, showing his feelings towards the girl. Another medium shot is used of him sitting in a car, he’s looking towards another car that is flying towards him, which he gets hit by. A zoom in and zoom out is then used of him, he’s turned into a robot, this zoom in and out suggests he’s being controlled by love. A close up is then used of a road sign saying ‘Road Closed’, suggesting something bad is going to happen. He falls off the cliff in his car suggesting that he’s fell for the girl. There is then a 2 shot of him and the girl looking at each other in the bed, they have wires on their heads, suggesting their love for each other is really controlling. Finally we see a medium shot of Chris, as the robot dying, suggesting he can finally rest as he has finally got the girl.

Tracking is used of Chris waking up in his dream, which then pans him in his bed looking dazed. Framing is used of the girl on the left hand side of the shot with stone on the right hand side, it shows she’s less important as Chris as he is framed in the middle of the shot. Tracking is used again following the girl in the maze, he’s trying to get to her. A dolly is also used of him in the maze looking around, confused, as he doesn’t know which way to go to capture her heart. Tracking is used again of Chris following the girl around the maze. Superimposition is used on Chris on the beach and in the maze, the images are on top of each other. It is used again, but this time of him on the beach and in the city. Rule of thirds is used of Chris being swept away by a tidal wave, which could represent the girl, and that he is falling hard for her.

A fade out is used of Chris on the beach to him in his room showing he is dreaming. A magical door way is used in his dream, which makes him travel to different places when he walks through it. Cross cutting is used showing Chris is in the bedroom, then on the beach singing and back to him in the bedroom, suggesting he’s got a lot of feelings and a lot of things are going on in his mind. Cross cutting is used again of Chris in the maze and the girl in the maze so the audience can see which way each of them are walking through it. They have also edited the girl walking through the maze wall to the next chapter in his dream, this makes the music video magical and mysterious. The start of the music video is repeated again, and Chris wakes up and walks through the magical door, this time ending up in a city, still following the girl of his dreams. Cross cutting is used again of him in the city to him on the beach, this could be to show that when he’s following the girl everything is hectic, but when hes on the beach hes showing his feelings and everything makes sense. Once again the start is repeated and this time Chris has travelled to a desert in a car. The girl is in a separate car and she hits him. This could suggest that love has hit Chris like a car, its all happened really fast. Cross cutting is used once again from him in the car to him on the beach, this shows a lot is happening to him. He then turns into a robot, cross cutting is used from the robot to the ‘Road Closed’ sign, suggesting that the love he is being controlled by is dangerous and there’s no way out of it.

As this is a music video it is all non-diegetic sound. The lyrics explain a lot about the music video as at the very start a voice over is used of a woman saying ‘Dearly beloved, if this love only exists in my dreams, don’t wake me up’ Straight away we know that Chris is dreaming from this voice over and that he feels so lost in the love of the girl he doesn’t want to be waken up. Later on in the song Chris sings ‘I don’t wanna fall asleep no, I don’t want to fall unless im falling for you’ This is important as throughout the music video he's trying to stay awake and the only time he falls, is when the girl crashes into him and his car falls of a cliff, here he has fell for her because it was her fault he fell off the cliff.

The mise en scene in the music video is important because at the very beginning of the music video Chris is wearing tye die clothes with gold chains on him, this suggests it’s a magical music video as tye dye is very quirky and mysterious. Smoke and mist is used in the music video making it look mysterious and you don’t know what is going to happen. As when Chris is on his own, everything seems clear, but when hes with the girl everything is crazy suggesting that love is like a roller coaster. The dress the girl is wearing in the music video is like a fairy tale dress, suggesting their relationship is very magical and special, it doesn’t seem real. Chris's clothes change, he is then wearing a leather jacket, jeans and sunglasses, suggesting things have calmed down and hes getting closer to the girl. He then turns into a robot, wires are used on Chris’s head suggesting hes being controlled by the girls love. Lighting used throughout the video is different. Natural lighting is used in some parts of the video where Chris is on the beach with the sun set, it makes him stand out, however lights are used on the characters to look like a non fictional character, to make the video look more magical.
